alt.country Says Goodbye

It is with a heavy heart and a tear I do my last show for alt.country. Since 1999 I've had an incredible experience here at WRUW. I've made many friends and sadly lost a few. During these 14 years I've had the pleasure of playing new releases by local, regional, national, and international acts. I am honored to have met many of the same musicians.

Today I present a walk through the years as I share a few of my experiences, a couple stories and a treasure trove of good times. A big thanks goes out to all my loyal listeners. Your calls have let me know that there really are people out there enjoying the music we've shared.

Let's not let this be goodbye but rather until we meet again.

Hogs and Kisses,
Charlie

MIKAL CRONIN w/ special guest MIRRORS to headline WRUW's 32nd Annual Studio-A-Rama Saturday Sept 7
Neal Dare Waves

Now in its 32ND year, Studio-A-Rama is WRUW's annual FREE, outdoor, day-long rock concert.  This year's headliner is Mikal Cronin.  Hailing from San Francisco, psychedelic/power-pop auteur Mikal Cronin has released two albums, his self-titled debut LP and this year's "MCII", his first on Merge Records.  Taking late sixties influences and filtering them through California fuzz, Mikal's music balances sweet melodies and chords with chunky psychedelic freak outs.  Although Mikal plays all the instruments on his records, he tours with a full band behind him.  Mikal Cronin has appeared on Conan O'Brien, and has performed at SXSW and Pitchfork Festival.  WRUW is proud to present Mikal Cronin as this year's Studio-A-Rama headliner.

Continuing our run of "special guest" pre-headlining performances (Scrawl in 2011, Death of Samantha last year), WRUW is proud to present another historic Ohio band as this year's special guest - Mirrors.  Formed in 1972(!), Mirrors were one of a pioneering group of Cleveland bands (along with Rocket From The Tombs, Styrenes, and Electric Eels) that defined a Cleveland "punk" sound even before the likes of Pere Ubu, Devo, and The Pagans.  Taking their cue from the Velvet Underground, Frank Zappa, and Captain Beefheart, Mirrors delivered a DIY pre-punk sound that was years ahead of its time.  Mirrors last performed on the Mather Memorial Courtyard stage in 1975 - after 38 years, Mirrors return to Studio-A-Rama.

In addition to Mika Cronin and Mirrors, Studio-A-Rama will also features local acts:

        Obnox (8PM)

        Goldmines

        Home and Garden

        Blaka Watra

        Ma Holos

        Smooth Brain

        Sh*tbox Jimmy

        Tuk 2

        Wingtones (1PM)

Studio-A-Rama, WRUW's annual free, outdoor 10 hour rock show, is both a thank you to WRUW listeners and a testament to WRUW's commitment to live, free music.  The concert begins at 1:00PM in the Mather Memorial Courtyard (11220 Bellflower Rd., Cleveland OH , 44106 ), outside the studios of WRUW.  The entire show shall be simulcast over 15,000 watts (Ohio's most powerful college radio station) on 91.1 FM, and also webcast around the world on www.wruw.org.

Studio-A-Rama also demonstrates WRUW's commitment to local and regional music, giving bands the opportunity to play before hundreds of people, opening for a national headliner.  Since 1982, WRUW has staged this free annual concert designed to thank listeners for their ongoing support throughout the year, and especially during WRUW's annual telethon.  An enthusiastic audience response during the annual on-air fundraiser enables WRUW to continue hosting Studio-A-Rama as well as fund live webcasting and support local music and live music.  Studio-A-Rama is one part of WRUW-FM's commitment to broadcasting local bands live. The "Live From Cleveland" show broadcasts bands from the WRUW-FM studios every Thursday evening from 10 until 11pm, and WRUW also simulcasts the live music from the main stage of the annual Hessler St. Fair, the Cleveland Institute of Art's Summer Solstice, and Weapons of Mass Creation.

ELVIS AT STAX
Charlie Saber

Elvis At Stax

Tune in early Thursday morning for a Cleveland radio broadcast exclusive on WRUW. Elvis At Stax: Radio Special will air at 2am August 8. All insomniacs, early-risers, and third shifters are in for a treat. You'll hear highlights from the 1973 Memphis sessions and interviews with the people who were there during those 12 memorable days.

The last major studio sessions in the career of Elvis Presley have finally been gathered together for the first time in one comprehensive box set. Elvis At Stax: Deluxe Edition was released this past Tuesday, August 6. Released simultaneously is a single CD of highlights from the box set simply titled Elvis At Stax, and a 180-gram, double-vinyl LP.

This new release chronicles recordings Presley made in his hometown of Memphis at Stax recording studios over 12 days in 1973, from July 21-25 and December 10-16. Even though he was using the iconic studio where Booker T. & the MG's laid the grooves for massive hits by artists from Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett to Sam & Dave and the Staple Singers, Presley imported his own players. And after aborting the July sessions because of technical problems, he even imported a mobile recording truck for the second one.

Still, with musicians raised in Memphis, Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and other Southern towns - some of whom had performed on his career-reviving 1969 sessions at Memphis' American Sound Studio - Presley again tapped into the bluesy soul, primal R&B, rockin' gospel, country-tinged rockabilly, and rich balladry that characterized his best work.

One major distinction of these recordings is that Elvis was calling the shots for the first time. Presley had a new recording contract and publishing arrangement that gave him control of song selection. With his Hollywood film obligations fulfilled and these new deals in tow, Presley was free to sing only what he felt like singing.

The Harry Nilsson Special Schmecial
Charlie Saber

The Harry Nilsson Special Schmecial

This Friday on the We're Not Off The Air, it's a one-hour radio special profiling Harry Nilsson. He was part iconoclast and part storyteller, and his curiosity, sense of humor and dramatic flair led him to create an extremely wide range of music. Some of Nilsson's classic trademark songs included in this radio special are Jump Into The Fire, Everybody's Talkin', Me & My Arrow, Without You, Don't Forget Me, and Coconut.

In this WRUW exclusive, you'll hear a lot of Harry's work and talk with family and friends about the man and the artist. It will air as we begin a new programming day at 2am and then again to close out the show at 4am. Late night/early morning rock 'n' roll fun on WRUW. Check it out!
